Ginger’s Recovery

The day Ginger got back from surgery, she slept a lot.  The day after the surgery, she still slept a lot.  It worried Joey and I that we didn’t see Ginger eating right away or much all day because she usually eats a lot and all the time.

The first night, just to be on the safe side, we fed her critical care and also some Baby GasX to get her intestines moving.  The next day, I saw that she was eating a little bit of pellets and veggies but it wasn’t like she usually does.  However, now that it’s been a few days, she is definitely back to her old self.  She’s eating a lot again and she’s also going to the bathroom.  I guess it just takes a couple of days to get all the medication out of a bunny’s system and to get them running again.

Ginger’s Tooth Extraction Surgery

Ginger and the rest of the family woke up really early this morning to go to the vet.  Juju came along for moral support.  We all got to the vet’s office at 8:30 and we took Ginger and Juju to the back of the vet’s office, into the belly of the surgical bay, to set them up in a kennel.  There was one other bunny there that Dr. Siperstein was prepping for surgery by literally, squeezing the pee out of it.  Ginger and Juju chilled in a kennel next to a couple of small dogs.

The reason for the vet visit was for Ginger’s surgery.  She had to get her peg tooth removed (again) because it wasn’t removed down to the root the first time when she had all her front teeth removed.  When she went in 2 weeks ago to get medication for the snuffles, Dr. Siperstein noticed that her one tooth had grown back with a vengeance and it was not being filed down naturally.  In addition, Ginger’s back molars were not filing themselves down normally so she had to get all her back molars filed down (via dremmel).  None were taken out though.

I was worried sick all day long until Joey txtd me at around 2PM to let me know that Ginger got out of surgery fine and that she’s resting.  I let out a sigh of relieve.  I felt for Ginger so much because this would be the second time she had to endure tooth extraction surgery, which is major for a rabbit.

At around 8PM, we picked up both buns from the office and they were both fine.  Ginger was a bit slow due to the pain medication and sedative but she immediately stuck her head out for me to rub her cheeks (her favorite spot for pets). Juju was being bitchy and didn’t acknowledge my presence.  He just had his butt to me the whole time.  He was obviously angry but I think it was because we put him through the stress.  Joey thinks it’s because they manhandled his wife, Ginger. In reality, knowing Juju the way I do, he was probably just angry for no reason.

I’m glad to say that Ginger is fine.  I have to monitor her poops and eating habits.  She was fed critical care right after the surgery but she did start eating pellets again soon after. She was given medication to prevent stasis and to manage the pain.  There was no medication to be administered at home.  The only thing she needs? — a lot of TLC (and treats).
