Ginger’s First Day

Today was Ginger’s adoption day and her first official day in her new home.  I had her pen all set up before she got there and all she had to do with lie back and relax and that’s what she did.

Being a Flemish Giant, she is naturally not as afraid of humans as other, more common and smaller bunnies.  Since rabbits are “prey” animals, they have a natural relax to run and hide whenever they encounter new territory or anything remotely scary.

Ginger is a special needs bunny though due to her lack of top and bottom incisors. She eats a lot of hay and pellets but have yet to get used to chewing fresh vegetables.  Fresh vegetables have to be diced or shredded so that she doesn’t need to use her non-existent incisors to tear.  Since she was abandoned at a shelter, she never got spayed or potty trained.  Now that she is spayed, she needs to be taught to use her litter box.  This is why there are so many litter boxes in her pen area. It’s to catch any accidents. (more…)

This past Sunday was truly Bunday!

Joey and I are moving and we thought that this would be a perfect opportunity to adopt another bunny from a shelter.  Of course we went back to the House Rabbit Network where we got our first bunny, Juju.  This time, we would take Juju along with us so that he can meet some bunnies and we can see how he interacts.  This is more commonly known as bunny dating.  It gives us humans a chance to see if bonding is possible and if they’ll be a right fit.

Juju first met with a pure white bunny named Hillary.  After some coaxing, Juju came out of his carrier but Hillary immediately started chasing Juju around.  This was not a good sign and we put a stop to it instantly.  (more…)

I received this from the House Rabbit Network yahoo chat this morning and I wanted to share.

It seems that a company called FlexPetz is in the business of renting out dogs and cats by the hour, not unlike clown rentals.  That scares me (both pet rentals and clowns).  Pets are our loving companions and not rent-by-the-hour commodities.  Pets need a stable loving home, not an hour-by-hour traumatize treatment.

Here is the site to help prevent FlexPetz from coming into Massachusetts and possibly expanding their inventory to include rabbits.

This is the first of many posts to come on this new blog.

I hope this blog to be a place where rabbit lovers can come to learn about the care of our furry companions and to share day-to-day stories about them.

I currently have one male, blue dutch house rabbit named JuJu.  I adopted him from the House Rabbit Network along with his brother Reeses (who I later renamed Appa), a male English Spot.  They were born into foster care to their mother Dakota who was a stray rescued by the House Rabbit Network.  JuJu is very headstrong and dominating while Appa was less aggressive yet not submissive enough to be bullied by JuJu.  While they were in foster care, Appa was bonded with JuJu because Appa got beat up by every other rabbit he was paired with.

I adopted both JuJu and Appa and brought them to their new home with a newly built NIC condo and free roam of the house.  Shortly thereafter, JuJu and Appa started fighting over dominance of their new home and eventually got so out of hand that they had to be separated.  Several weeks after their first fight, I decided to bond Appa with my friend Tiffany’s bun, jlo, instead of trying to rebond two aggressive male buns together.

JuJu has been a single bunny with free roam of the house since October.  Appa and jlo has bonded successfully and happily living in New York City.  I am now planning on adopting another bunny (probably female) to bond with JuJu shortly after my move to a new residence.  My thought is that moving is a perfect time to bond JuJu because he would not have marked his territory in the new house and both bunnies can start anew in a strange home.
